Enlightened Exposure

A Conversation with Photographer David Henry

Just a few days ago I had a fascinating conversation with photographer David Henry of Enlightened Exposure. Since I have known him, David has been producing beautiful work… but something happened over the last 6 months or so. His new photography is absolutely exquisite. It’s on a whole new level that has me awestruck, not only by the beauty of the images but by the incredible amount of growth he has achieved in his craft over such a short period of time. I find myself inspired and moved by the power, honesty and craftsmanship of his vision.

I wanted to share just a few of the things I got from our conversation:

1. Let go of trying to control the results of the shoot. David spoke about letting the shoot go where it “wants” to go. If you go with the flow all you have to do is keep your eyes open for the moments of gold that almost inevitably show up along the way.

2. Allowing yourself to be deeply moved by beauty can be a big part of capturing images that will be deeply moving for others.

3. When a shoot is not going well you might feel that you are totally responsible. If you check in with whoever you are working with you might just find that they are feeling the same way. Doing so can relive all the pressure so that you can enjoy the creative process.

4. If we enjoy what we are doing from moment to moment, the quality of the work will likely take care of itself.
