Dee Dettling Limited Edition Cover Art
STANDARD COVER ART BY CARL GRIM

I have been bullied, ever since I was a little kid. In cruel and subtle ways, I was constantly told that I wasn’t good enough, that there was something wrong with me.

It was painful and did a lot of damage. It would have been easy to believe all the horrible things people said about me.

As a model, creating art has put me on the path to loving myself. Every photo shoot has been a new learning experience, an opportunity for self love. Through this process, I’ve become thankful for my body and what it is capable of.

The most important relationship in my life, is the relationship I have with myself. As a model, what really matters is what I think of myself. That’s what people end up seeing in these images.

My family, friends and dog teach me daily that it doesn’t matter what others think of me or my body. The hate and jealousy people direct towards others is usually due to their own insecurities. You have to be unhappy about something in your own life to try and bring people down. I am so thankful to have people in my life who accept me for who I really am.

I make art to inspire other women who may be plus size or curvy. I want them to know they are not alone and that beauty comes in more than just one size. I strive to show all women, especially those who have been bullied, that there is far more to them than what unkind

and insecure people may say about them based only on appearance. I hope other plus size women will see my art and gain more confidence to believe in themselves and their own talents.

The opportunity to be published in a magazine has been a dream. I never thought it would happen. I have had many people try to stop me because I was not thin enough, beautiful enough or good enough to be called a “model.” I am so proud of myself for not listening to those voices.

I still struggle on occasion with my self image and sometimes have to take it one day at a time. I am thankful for the people who have followed and supported me since the beginning. They see something in me that transcends judgment and body shame. They inspire me to keep going and never give up, no matter how hard it may get.

To everyone who may feel outcast, I want to say … don’t let bullies stand in the way of your dreams. Embrace your curves and your imperfections. It is not your size that defines you! It doesn’t matter what negative things people have to say about you. Learn to have faith in yourself and in your abilities over others’ opinions.

Unveiled chronicles my intimate photographic encounters with hundreds of women over more than a decade.

Inspired by my own liberating experience in front of the camera, I opened Lolo’s Boudoir studio in 2004 as a place for women’s self-discovery. Since then women of all ages, stages and walks of life have come to be photographed by me, nude.

Unveiled reveals the unexpected interplay between photography and healing, between seer and seen, and what it takes to expose, and ultimately find oneself. This work shares how I’ve used the power of the camera to help women dismantle shame, insecurity and doubt, so they can emerge in their unguarded, untamed human splendor. Lone

These images let you be a voyeur and experience women’s most private unveiling. I hope you will laugh, cry and recognize yourself as you witness these women uncovering and recovering lost, discarded and disowned parts of themselves.

While most photography of women has been dominated by the male gaze, this book is about women looking at themselves. It is a timely and thrilling tribute, a contemporary rite of passage for women awakening to their own skin and aliveness. It offers an important artistic contribution to a cultural dialog about women and the ownership of our bodies – and our lives.

Unveiled is everywoman’s story.

Real bodies, real stories, real people

More than 100 real naked stories in the Embody Project Book

I struggled to write this essay …

I know the full impact, the true impact, of this entire experience won’t hit me until these words are shared alongside my picture. My body, my story; they are my identity.

She … With wild curls backlit by the sun like
a copper halo, green eyes glinting, an amber necklace as her only adornment. Body humming from the inhaling the crisp air, the scent of dry autumn leaves and water on rock. Exhaling, to taste the nostalgia of fall in the mountains.

During the shoot with Erica, I hurdled boulders, leapt towards the sun, tipped into handstands, tumbled out of cartwheels, but ultimately stood naked with all that I am and all that I had to offer, laid bare.

She … Bare body, embodied. Honest, unearthed, and leaning into the unknown.
Her body poised like a question-mark; secure in her skin yet simultaneously stretching as much as she dared. Freedom held in the sunlight at the tips of her hair, the tug of the wind, within her whispered prayer.

I felt so certain, so at peace. And yet since then, I have written and erased and written and erased, a senseless, ceaseless cycle to try to get it right. All our lives we are told to do the right thing, look the right way, have the right body, speak the right words, go to the right school, get the right job, marry the right man or the right woman, raise our kids the right way…

For the last week, I have grappled with the want to write this essay the “right” way. Until now.

She …Struck by realization like a lightning bolt: she was wasting her time trying to define her

experiences as good or bad, right or wrong – it was all just life. Instead, she decided to remind herself that she was brave, strong, and creative enough to handle anything.

I am now sitting here, laughing, finally letting go of feeling obligated to write the “right” essay. We can only make it our truth, own what that truth is, and trust that it is enough. So I will write it my way, because it is my story, my body. There is a certain freedom that comes from the act of accepting: not chasing, not retreating — simply being, as a living being.

Rather ironically, the passage on Death from The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran, spoke to me the most in this process of living:

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from
its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when
you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountaintop, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to embody my body in this newfound way, and know that process may take days, months, years, my entire life, to learn and live and love. To embody is to make a choice, to breathe in the space in between; to soak up stillness with toe curling contentment, as well as wide spread arms

and fingers outstretched for the next moment, motion, movement.

She … Blessed is she, with a body that can dance.

Nude photography from The Embody Project

Erica Mueller

Creator of The Embody Project

“The Embody Project journey began with me, struggling to love my body.  My teens, 20s, and early 30s were spent in various stages of eating disorders, depression, suffering and spiritual seeking, all attempts to find a deeper meaning in life, beyond my culture’s ideals of beauty and power.  Being a photographer, I made several attempts at healing through self-portrait projects, which were useful but ultimately failed to provide me with a real sense of how I fit into the greater whole of humanity.”

Whenever I begin to feel self conscious or worry about the way others are viewing my body, I think back on my experience with the Embody Project and immediately begin to feel comfort and confidence. I’m reminded of the unbelievable amount of love that I have for myself and for my body. The Embody Project has had an extremely positive impact on my life and for that I’m forever grateful.
Alison
Participating in the Embody Project forced me to put to words the confusing relationships I’ve had with exercise, my body, and cultural expectations. Both the experience of writing the essay and seeing my photograph gave me the opportunity to explicitly define, for myself, my ideas about strength and femininity. Beyond that, it was incredibly fun to strip down with some dear friends and lift heavy weights! Erica was a complete joy to work with, and I felt supported, loved, and respected every step of the way. I am proud to be a part of the Embody Project.
Dana
As an already open person who has become fairly comfortable with nudity in my recent years, this project seemed ideal for me. There was some discomfort, but the whole experience was phenomenal. Erica is wonderful to work with, and she really allows freedom in the shoot, which makes it feel completely natural. I think the most difficult part was digging into my psyche for the essay, knowing that I’d already come out victorious for having shared in a sort of universally encompassing realm of vulnerability and expressing that everyone really is beautiful.
Bri
The Embody Project was a lens into the vulnerable me, the authentic, fierce and blossoming me. The one I have been reluctant to show, perhaps even see for myself. Working with Erica was a balm on my heart, a gesture, a huge bouquet of self-acceptance and care for the divinity and perfection in each of us. I offer deep gratitude for your work, your artistic eye, and loving presence where all is illuminated.
Keri
What stuck with me the most from my experience with the Embody Project didn’t have anything to do with me being naked and photographed. It had to do with my realization of how women are storied in our culture. As a male in our western society, I had never been invited to dance with the fear, judgement and objectification that women feel, like I was through my participation in this project.
Matthew
My Embody Project experience was a way for me to recognize the support from the Universe that my story, expression and body is influential on international levels and is powerfully needed during these times on the planet! Truly, life enhancing and magical!

Our Most Essential Substance

From conception till the moment we are born, we are suspended in water. Approximately 70% of the human body is composed of this clear fluid substance. Water is essential to the existence of life as we know it.

In his art, Dmitry Laudin takes us deep into this primordial and essential element. Within his images, we are freed of our desperate need to return to the surface for air. We float, at home in the depths, liberated from the heavy gravity of surface life. We fly weightless through deep blue spaces in a symbolic return to the womb of all life.

Gary Samson – Unflinching

Revealing Honesty

I have been making black and white film portraits since the late 1970’s. Ten years ago I decided to reach outside my comfort zone to explore nude portraits. The nude figure has been the subject of artistic interpretation for thousands of years in sculpture, paintings, drawings and more recently in photography by great talents such as Alfred Steiglitz, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, Imogene Cunningham, Ruth Bernhardt and Jock Sturges, among many others. Over time, my approach and technique evolved. My project expanded to include approximately two hundred people.

This body of work spans a decade and includes nude portraits of playwrights, actors, choreographers, bankers and, artists, as well as aspiring and professional models. In making these images, I have followed the advice of the great German portrait photographer Lotte Jacobi who said, “let the subject rule the photograph.” I surrender to the collaborative process, encouraging my subjects to pose and gesture in their own unique way. Sometimes spending several hours or even a full day is what creates the opportunity to capture subjects in a revelatory way.

An ongoing collaboration with some of the models has brought the process into their home environments (in addition to the studio). This expanded scope has inspired the subjects to more personally shape the direction of the images we create together. I am extremely grateful for the friendships, time and cooperation that Brianna, Emma, Hayley, Maya, and Milena have provided, so that I could experience the profound honestly of these photographic portraits.

Working with Desert Queen was a beautiful and surreal experience. Everything about her seemed natural, fluid, and palpable. Our collaboration was a free-form expression of our creativity. She was uncanny in her anticipation of compositions, as if she’d returned from the future and knew exactly what I imagined for each shot. .

I want viewers to imagine being the model, moving with her, looking back at the lens through her eyes, and maybe even feeling like they inhabit her body. When looking at images in this imaginative way, viewers may be able to see more than they do with just their eyes. In my work, I want to reveal the infinite panorama of beauty and body shape. There is no limit to imagination, and there is no limit to the diversity of human beauty.

Raw and True

I had always been attracted to capturing the human body in its most raw and true form. I began shooting models during a dark time. I was working nights with no social life, feeling disconnected from loved ones. I felt sad, mad, hurt and alone. It felt like a dream that I couldn’t wake up from. photography became an outlet to cope and express my feelings.

My best friend, became my model and my muse. We shared passionate views about the human form and built a strong bond through the art that we created together. When we are nude, we are no longer hidden by the barriers of clothing. It’s absolutely revealing of true emotion and feeling. Creating nude images is pure freedom of expression.

As an artist, I have learned there are many emotions that people tend to keep hidden. I like to encourage models to be expressive and accepting of their feelings and their body. When someone looks through my work, I want them to see more than just a person who’s naked. I want them to see and feel the emotion that is projected by the image, and realize there is a story being told.

In every new collaboration, there is an art to helping a model feel comfortable. It requires trust and acceptance for them to let their guard down. It is a gift to reveal a vulnerable honest side that would otherwise remain hidden. It’s an honor helping a person feel beautiful through the images that we create.

It’s so clear and simple that beauty lives in all different shapes, sizes, colors and genders. Beauty is always evolving, and it walks so many different paths. It my great passion and love to capture as many individuals as possible. I want to show the world that there is nothing shameful or negative about the human form.

“Believe in yourself. Study the greats, and become better.” Michael Jackson once said this, and it’s a quote that I live by. I set out to create a lane of my own while paying homage to the greats that came before me. I am inspired by the purity and rawness of the human psyche. Forever a student to the world and people around me, I strive to bring those visuals to life, without fear of tackling social issues, freedom of speech, or appreciation of the human form in its purest state.

I simply want to inspire people. My work is about self discovery and liberation. Through my art, I hope to inspire people to be all that they can. I want to encourage others to and erase thoughts of the outside world and do what they set their minds’ to. I’ve learned that photography is about telling stories. The opportunities are endless when there’s a vision and drive to create something special. I’ve gone from simply taking pictures to creating a collection of art to inspire and motivate

people. Most people see the camera as just that, but I see it as an instrument of creativity. photography is an art and photographers are artists.
